What are Digital Technologies and what does this mean?
The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority ('ACARA') assists Teachers with respect to the two key learning areas: Digital Technologies and Design and Technology. Here is an overview provided by ACARA to assist with regards to What are Digital Technologies.
This Weebly Website is presented to provide a Teacher with an insight into the knowledge, understanding, processes and production skills which can be attained by the students' with respect to Digital Technologies. This resource is presented with the intended purpose of providing examples of resources in relation to the key learning area of Digital Technologies. Accordingly, this resource will be sequenced into a 4 stage learning approach, What is Digital Technology, Identification of a Computer and its' Parts, How do Digital Systems connect together to form a network and Digital Technology Problems. These chosen learning approaches will assist a teacher to address the following key learning areas in the Australian Curriculum ('Curriculum') :
Year 5 - 6 ‘Digital Technologies: Knowledge and Understanding - Examine the main components of common digital systems and how they may connect together to form networks to transmit data (ACTDIK014)’ with elaboration:
- ‘explaining how data may be transmitted between two digital systems in different ways, for example that wires or cables are used in wired networks to transfer data from one digital system to another, and radio waves are used to transmit data in wireless or mobile networks’.
Year 5 - 6 ‘Digital Technologies: Processes and Production Skills ‘Define problems in terms of data and functional requirements drawing on previously solved problems (ACTDIP017)’ with elaboration:
- ‘describing in simple terms the nature of a problem and what a solution needs to achieve’.
It is important for a teacher to consider General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum priorities which may be encapsulated in these resources. Accordingly, it would be prudent to ensure that the General Capabilities in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Information Communication Technology ('ICT') and Creative and Critical Thinking are included in the final preparation of any learning sequence with respect to the key learning area of Digital Technologies.
With this in mind, General Capabilities of Literacy, may include but are not limited to Comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing, Composing texts through speaking, writing and creating, Text knowledge, Word Knowledge and Visual Knowledge; Numeracy, may include but is not limited to interpreting statistical information; ICT, may include but is not limited to Communicating with ICT and Managing and operating ICT. Creative and Critical Thinking, may include but is not limited to Inquiring – identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas, Generating ideas, possibilities and actions, Reflecting on thinking and processes and analysing, synthesising and evaluating reasoning and procedures.
